Born in Shanghai in 1936, TaoHo took his first degree in art history at Williams College, Massachusetts, USA with a double minor in theology and music with four years full scholarship. He received the Hutchison Memorial Prize for distinction in creative arts upon graduation in 1960. Awarded the Arthur Lehman Fellowship, he then studied architecture and urban design; receiving a Master in Architecture from Harvard University in 1964.

In 1968, TAOHO Design practice was established, combining architecture, urban design, interior and graphic design. TaoHo was the first to introduce the Bauhaus Basic Design courses to Hong Kong in 1965 as a lecturer at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD) from Williams College in 1979 in recognition of his energetic efforts to promote cultural activities in Hong Kong.

During more than 30 years of practice, TaoHo has been awarded numerous prizes, including two Silver Medals and five Design Merit awards from The Hong Kong Institute of Architects. In 1995 he won the HKIA Prize for outstanding community services to his profession and in 1996 he was awarded the Bicentennial Medal For Career Distinction from Williams College. In 1997, TaoHo was awarded First Distinction Design Prize for the design of King Tower in Shanghai from the Shanghai Construction Bureau. TaoHo was elected President of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects for the period 1997 and 1998.

TaoHo also showed his support to the local cultural activities. In 1987, he presented a 17-programme weekly radio series relating music to other forms of art for Radio Television of Hong Kong (RTHK), entitled “TaoHo on Music”. In 1997, TaoHo became one of the four regular panelists of RTHK weekly programme “Free As The Wind”, sharing his views on cultural and social issues with about one million audience.

Dr. Tao Ho had been debilitated since a stroke in April 2002. He passed away peacefully on March 29th, 2019 in Hong Kong, aged 82.
